Giuseppe Arcimboldo (Milano, 1526-1593) fu un pittore  attivo nell’ultima metà del XVI secolo presso la Corte degli Asburgo di Vienna e successivamente a Praga.

Arcimboldo fu un “artista di corte” polifunzionale, le cui opere uniche e capricciose guadagnarono  il favore di Rodolfo II, Imperatore del Sacro romano impero, nonché amante di rare opere d’arte.

Il nome di Arcimboldo è soprattutto ricordato come creatore di numerosi ritratti allegorici, dove la forma del soggetto è costituita da una combinazione veramente ingegnosa di motivi non correlati, come frutta, verdura, pesce e libri. Questi strani quadri cifrati, in cui è difficile separare le interazioni tra fantasia e ragione, avevano lo scopo di sorprendere, stimolare e divertire i sensi, invitando all’interpretazione. Essi si sono rivelati uno stimolo importante per i surrealisti e poi artisti del XX secolo.

Le circa 100 opere presenti in questa mostra -disposte intorno a un nucleo di disegni e circa 10 dipinti ad olio di Arcimboldo, prestati da importanti musei in tutto il mondo- aiuteranno gli spettatori a comprendere i segreti nascosti dietro la creazione di un mondo immaginario, insieme alla sua influenza sui successori . I visitatori della esposizioni potranno godere di questa prima introduzione in Giappone di Arcimboldo tanto spiritosa quanto affascinante.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526-1593) was a painter born in Milan, Italy and active in the latter half of the 16th century at the Hapsburg court in Vienna and later in Prague.

Arcimboldo was a multifaceted “court entertainer”, whose unique and whimsical works gained favor with Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor and lover of rare artworks.

Arcimboldo’s name is primarily and widely remembered as the creator of numerous allegorical portraits, where the subject’s form is made up of a truly ingenious combination of unrelated motifs, such as fruit, vegetables, fish and books. These strange, cipher-like paintings, in which it is hard to separate the interactions between fantasy and reason, surprise, stimulate and amuse the senses and invite interpretation. They proved to be a major stimulus for the Surrealists and later artists of the 20th century.

The approximately 100 works in this exhibition — arranged around a core of drawings and about 10 oil paintings by Arcimboldo lent by major museums worldwide — will help viewers understand the secrets behind his creation of an imaginary world, along with his influence on his successors. We hope that visitors will enjoy this first introduction in Japan of Arcimboldo’s weirdly witty and wonderful artistry.
