Jenny and Neville Reid first visited Italy in September 2001, and soon learned something that they have passed on to many others planning to visit that country. That is that Italy is addictive, and it is very difficult to go there just once. In fact the Reid’s next trip, later this year, will be number fourteen.
Many of these trips have been for painting, drawing inspiration from the light and the surrounding scenery to be found in so many Italian locations. Jenny is a well known artist, being a founding and signature member of the Toronto Watercolour Society, past-President of the Don Valley Art Club and a member of East Central Ontario Art Association and Central Connection. Together with husband Neville, who describes himself as a colour blind scientist, with no artistic ability, she has travelled with her artist friends to locations in Umbria, Tuscany and Sicily.

These trips, nine of them to date, spanning the period from 2005 to the present, follow a simple, but highly effective formula. The group members, eight in total, pool their resources to rent a villa and a van, and to buy food. Neville, the non-artist, takes care of logistics, and holds the communal purse. The main meal of the day is catered, or eaten at a restaurant; trips to a local supermarket take care of the other two meals, which are taken “at home”.

In this way the artists of the group are freed of the necessity and burden of planning and preparing food, and can devote themselves to soaking up the, always paintable, surroundings, either at the villa, or in nearby locations reached in the rented van. The fruits of the work of five of these artists can be seen in the exhibition, Journeys to Italy, on until the end of August 2017 at the Joseph D. Carrier Gallery at the Columbus Centre, 901 Lawrence Avenue West. This show features the work of Jenny Reid, Carolyne Pascoe, Margaret Roseman, Patricia McFarland and Susan Chater and reflects trips to all three of Umbria, Tuscany and Sicily.

The members of this group are unanimous in expressing the advantages of going on a painting trip of this type. The change to the magnificent scenery and surroundings of Italy provides a boost to creativity, while considerable energy can be derived from working with and in a group. At the same time, being away from home and having somebody else worry about the logistics provides an atmosphere with few distractions and interruptions.
Italy provides a magnificent locale for such a trip, with beautiful scenery, magnificent art and wonderful people, not to mention great food and wine.

Jenny e Neville Reid per la prima volta visitarono l’Italia nel Settembre 2001 e presto impararono qualcosa che hanno trasmesso a molti altri che intendono visitare il “Bel Paese”. Il fatto e che l’Italia è coinvolgente, ed è molto difficile andarci solo una volta. Infatti il prossimo viaggio di Jenny Reid, verso la fine di quest’ anno, sarà il quattordicesimo.
Molti di questi viaggi sono stati per la pittura, traendo ispirazione dalla luce e dal paesaggio circostante in numerosi paesi e città italiane.
Jenny è un’ artista ben conosciuta in Canada, essendo a founding member of the Watercolor Society of Toronto, ed ex Presidente of the Don Valley Art Club in Toronto nonchè socio iscritto della East Central Ontario Art Association e della Central Connection.
Insieme al marito Neville, che si definisce scienziato cieco, perchè privo di capacità artistica, ha viaggiato con gli amici in località dell’ Umbria, della Toscana e della Sicilia.
Questi viaggi, 9 fino ad oggi, iniziati dal 2005, seguono una formula semplice ma altamente efficace.
I membri del gruppo, otto in totale, raggruppano le loro risorse per affittare una villa e un furgone, e per comprare cibo. Neville, che non è artista, si prende cura della logistica e tiene la borsa comune. Il pasto principale della giornata viene servito o mangiato in un ristorante; poi si fa la spesa in un supermercato locale per altri due pasti che vengono cucinati a casa.
In questo modo gli artisti del gruppo si liberano da queste necessità, per dedicarsi ed immergersi completamente nel disegno e nella pittura, sia nella villa sia nelle vicine località che si raggiungono con il furgone affittato.
I frutti del lavoro di questi cinque artisti si possono vedere nella mostra, “Journeys to Italy“, fino alla fine di Agosto 2017 presso la Galleria Joseph D. Carrier, Columbus Center, 901 Lawrence Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario Canada
Questa mostra è rappresenta dalle opere d’arte di Jenny Reid, Carolyn Pascoe, Margaret Roseman, Patricia McFarland e Susan Chater, e riflette –come dicevamo- viaggi in Umbria, Toscana e Sicilia.
Ci sono molti vantaggi a fare un “painting trip” in questo modo, e i membri di questo gruppo ne sono del tutto soddisfatti. Il magnifico paesaggio ambientale che offre l’Italia, dà un forte impulso alla creatività, e sviluppa una considerevole energia che può essere socializzata se ci si trova con un gruppo piacevole.
Allo stesso tempo, essere lontani da casa e non avere alcune preoccupazioni fornisce un’atmosfera con poche distrazioni e interruzioni.
L’Italia offre tanta ispirazione per un viaggio così, grazie ai bellissimi paesaggi, alla magnifica atmosfera che trasmette e alle persone meravigliose, per non parlare di ottimi piatti e buonissimi vini.
